a lot of random stuff is going to be happening here..
This was another Book of the Month selection of mine. Bad choice. BAD CHOICE. Although I am happy that it included my name as a character, she was gross and it was insulting!
Anyways, All the Ugly and Wonderful Things is about a young girl, Wavy. Her mom does meth and her father figure deals it. Throughout the story she helps look after her younger brother as well. Early in the story she meets Kellen, a big guy who helps work for/with her dad. The remainder of the story is about her trials and tribulations growing up without an actual supportive family - her only support in life is Kellen (who is an adult).
The rest of the story goes on and on to emphasize that she’s smart even though she doesn’t talk to anyone besides Kellen. I think the thing that bothered me the most was how uncomfortable I was with Wavy and Kellen’s relationship which is particularly annoying because that was the POINT OF THE WHOLE STORY APPARENTLY.
I would not recommend it unless you like books about struggling adolescents with addict parents and inappropriate relationships with minors.
Book-Alicias are never great people who do extraordinary things. Never.
